One of the urgent tasks in pelargonium breeding is to identify different cultivars and hybrids by the contours of their leaves. To solve this problem, it is proposed to use scanned images of leaves, and to apply automated system-cognitive analysis (ASC-analysis) as a toolkit for building a measuring system and its application. The shape of the contour of a particular leaf is considered as quantitative information about the cultivar, including both information about the true leaf shape of a given cultivar (genotype) and changes due to random environmental exposure (phenotype). The software toolkit of the ASC-analysis is an intellectual system “Eidos”, which provides quantitative information about the true leaf shape of each cultivar based on a number of specifi leaves examples of this cultivar and creates one generalized image of the leaf shape, independent on the external environment inflence.
