SOCHI RESEARCH CENTRE OF RAS: NATURAL SCIENCE RESEARCH (1989–2020)

In 2020, a new Federal Research Centre the Subtropical Scientific Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences (FRC SSC of RAS) was organized in Sochi by combining Sochi Research Centre of RAS (SRC of RAS) and Russian Research Institute of Floriculture and Subtropical Crops (RRIFSC). The paper presents the most important research types and results that were carried out at SRC of RAS over a thirty-year period in the natural science direction. The work uses materials of scientific and organizational reports of the organization, comprehensive inspections of SRC of RAS, as well as scientific reports on research topics. The main activities of SRC of RAS are fundamental and applied research of economic, environmental and social problems of the development of the recreational and tourist sector in the Russian economy, as well as scientific and methodological assistance to the sustainable development of the Southern Federal District and regions of recreational and tourist specialization on the Black Sea coast of Russia. When implementing the Programs, an integrated approach was used to solve the problems of protection, rational use and management of natural resources on the Black Sea coast of Russia. The accumulated experience of fundamental theoretical research is embodied in a number of major projects for the development of tourism in Russia and beyond its borders, particularly, in Krasnodar Krai, Crimea, a number of Caucasian republics (South Ossetia, the Republic of Abkhazia), Primorsky Krai and other regions, which is reflected in dozens of monographs, hundreds of papers and scientific collections, materials of international and Russian scientific and practical conferences, as well as in analytical materials submitted to the executive authorities of the federal and regional levels. After 2020, some types of research (on regional climate, mountain glaciation) were continued in the newly formed «Geoecology and Natural Processes» Laboratory of FRC SSC of RAS.
